The Space Between And Its Purpose

In 2008, I had finally painted one of "The Space Between" series and had an exhibition entitled as such. Over the years I came to discover that so many artists had arrived at this place, this thought, this realization, and I saw their interesting expressions of it and how they vastly differed from mine. For me, the space between things is much larger than for most, it seems anyway. It doesn't look like too many people contemplated this one this far. At first, that space began as a hairline, a fracture, an atom's width. As time passed and I evolved through my life experiences and studies, I came to realize that the space between this and that was more like a pencil's width.

Sometime later, it increased again and again until I realized the scale of it was not just a measurable space (physical), but rather a feeling we all experienced that is scaled on an invisible and personal level; a level only you could know about yourself. (I haven't even begun to tell you what I found there!) I couldn't help but arrive at this conclusion: When you set foot down the road (any road) and keep treading, you'll be sure to pass some landmarks. That's how you know where you are. Look back on those from time to time. Distance is important.

Some of us choose many paths and disperse our directions, like short strands on a spiderweb. Those of us have the ability to connect the detailed pieces. They are usually of the creative type... designers, musicians, dancers, artists, comedians, etc. Others choose an ultra-specific path, like neurosurgeons and psychologists. Those are the ones who are presumed to know the ins and outs of things (details) and share with the connectors. These peeps are the long strands of the web. Together, we can paint a comprehensive picture to benefit the elements as well as the whole. And some people, however few they may be, are a whole web on their own. They are the starters, the big bangs, the sparks, and the catalysts. We each have a place and all are necessary. But also, let's not forget that we are not obligated to stay in the same place... ever. Rest assured, someone will fill the slot.

Final Destination (2004)

On any path, it first appears as if you're alone until you realize others are on their way and others passed through already. Whenever you find some tidbit of info that resonates with you, heed those words and follow those paths. You'll probably want them for later but you haven't realized it yet. I'm hoping to save you some time as some have done for me. They kept telling me I was wise beyond my years but I never understood why. Now I see and I am so grateful for those who shared their wisdom with me when I was young. Much love to those of us who share their experiences with others in the hopes of helping each other to help ourselves.

Don't get me wrong... not everyone who shares something aims to help or has good intentions, so proceed with caution. Some people give outright stupid advice! Learn to tell the difference as early in life as possible. These unseen things about us, they exist in the space between. If you leave this space unexplored it's a monumental disadvantage because others have explored and continue to do so. As a result, they possess knowledge (at least) and understanding (at best) which are incredible tools.

The space between has multiple perspectives. It can be explored on a personal and emotional level as well as on a physical and scientific level. Sure as shit, it can be explored on a whole lot of other levels. Thus far, it's been worth exploring every time. I can see how broadening the space between on a multitude of levels can really organize the closet of one's soul, but not in a metaphorical kind of way, but in a tangible way. It feels substantially and distinctly different. The space between is where you maintain the essence of who you are and, ironically, it's the most neglected space of all.

To find something and to define something are two significantly different things! Remember that.
